Origin

Viñedos y Bodega Mendel arises from the union of Roberto de la Mota, one of the most respected and experienced Argentine winemakers, with an Argentine family committed to obtaining wines of the highest quality. Our search is to express the singular character of our vineyards and the incomparable attributes of the Mendoza terroir.

Roberto de La Mota

Roberto likes to joke that he was born in a winery, since his winemaking education and training began long before he studied at the National University of Cuyo. He took his first steps at the hands of his father, the most famous Argentine winemaker, Don Raúl de la Mota.

After completing his studies in Montpellier, France, and managing one of the most important wineries in the country, Roberto was able to fulfill the dream of owning his own winery since 2002 with Mendel Wines.

Climate

The climate is desert and continental with well-defined seasons throughout the year. Scarce rainfall, less than 200 mm per year, makes it necessary to irrigate. It is there where the viticulture of the region is especially unique: Traditional irrigation carried out in the past by local indigenous people, and now in the hands of artisan winegrowers, allows phylloxera to be controlled with free-standing vineyards and to achieve adequate vigor; as well as the level of performance and concentration desired.

Location

Our old 1928 Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located in Perdriel and Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo.
We also have Cabernet Franc, Semillon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in our Finca Remota vineyards located in Paraje Altamira, Valle de Uco. Our vineyards are located between 900 and 1,150 meters above sea level, in the best and highest irrigated lands of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, Mendoza.

Floors

The soils are of alluvial origin formed with materials from the Andes Mountains. Very stony, highly permeable, with little content of nitrogen and organic matter, rich in potassium; They are soils that give rise to low to medium vigor vineyards but that allow reaching high levels of concentration and intensity in their grapes.

Mayor Drummond

Luján de Cuyo

It is located in Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo, at 950 meters above sea level. It has a sandy loam and calcareous soil of alluvial origin, with good drainage. The climate is cold in winter and mild in summer, with a temperature range of 15 °C between day and night, which allows us to have optimum maturity. The average annual rainfall is 200 mm. We have 4 plots with drip irrigation and the rest with surface irrigation. Here are 11 hectares of massal selection Malbec planted in 1928; 2 hectares of Petit Verdot (both trellised varieties) and a small Tempranillo vineyard.

FINCA DE LOS ANDES

Perdriel

Luján de Cuyo

It is located in Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, at 1,050 meters above sea level. It has loam-loam-clay soil with the presence of stone that favors drainage; It is of alluvial origin.

The climate is cold in winter, with occasional snowfall, and mild in summer, but with cool nights. The average annual rainfall is 230 mm. The entire farm has drip irrigation that allows us to use and make efficient use of water. Vines: we have 4 hectares of Malbec and 2 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, all trellised.

FINCA REMOTA

Paraje Altamira

Valle de Uco

It is located in Altamira, Valle de Uco at 1,040 meters above sea level. It has a sandy and stony loam soil, very loose and of alluvial origin. The climate is cold in winter with occasional snowfalls, and mild in summer with cold nights; there is a large daily thermal amplitude. The average annual rainfall is 170 mm. The first part of this farm is small and old, planted in 1947, from where we produce our “Mendel Semillón” and “Malbec Finca Remota”. Irrigation is superficial and the conduction is in low trellis, with yields lower than 40 qq per ha. In the second part we have modern management with medium-height trellises and drip irrigation. In this farm we currently have 8 has de Malbec, 3 has de Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 ha de Semillón, 2 has de Cabernet Franc y 2 has de Petit Verdot.

Our Wines

Mendel DOC Luján de Cuyo is an intense red Malbec with violet hues. On the nose, it presents intense aromas of red and black fruits such as black cherries and plums, floral scents of violets; After stirring in the glass, spicy and soft aromas of licorice emerge.

On the palate, it exhibits a great volume and structure, ripe and well-present tannins, being at the same time silky and very friendly. Flavors of black cherry and plum reappear, providing it with an exceptional length on the palate.

Finca Remota is a 100% Malbec made with grapes from a small plot in Altamira, Valle de Uco, at 1,100 meters above sea level. These particular conditions give us an aromatic profile dominated by fresh fruit and floral touches, such as violets. On the palate, thanks to very controlled yields from old vines, a very good concentration and structure is achieved, with round and elegant tannins. Undoubtedly one of the most important characteristics of this wine is its intensity and complexity of fruit without the dominance of the wood, despite having remained in new barrels for a long time. Only one explanation is possible: the incomparable quality of the terroir and our old vines give rise to a wine from another dimension.

Mendel Unus is the perfect combination between Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The Cabernet Sauvignon, with its well-present and ripe tannins, forms part of the structure of the wine and the Malbec collaborates by giving it complexity, fat and volume in the mouth. The result is a very complex, intense, high-volume wine, but especially elegant and balanced.

Mendel Malbec is the maximum expression of this variety in our terroir. This variety perfectly adapted to this climate and soil shows here its typical aromas of ripe fruit, plums, raisins and violets; and in the mouth the most outstanding characteristics are its body, fat and fleshiness.

Mendel Cabernet Sauvignon is combined as a very intense and complex set of ripe plums, black cherries, raspberries, sour cherries, fresher floral notes and those from the wood. It is a very elegant and harmonious wine in which its acidity and freshness give it balance and length in the mouth, ensuring excellent and prolonged aging in the bottle.

Mendel Cabernet Franc 2018 is made with grapes from our own vineyard located in Paraje Altamira, Valle de Uco. This varietal presents fruity aromas such as raspberries, cherries and a spicy side, typical of the variety, which provides freshness and complexity. Its tannins are firm and ripe with a silky texture and great elegance. Mendel Cabernet Franc is an example of what this variety can give in the unique terroir of Paraje Altamira.

Mendel Semillon is the maximum expression of this old white grape variety in a still wine. It clearly presents its varietal notes such as white flowers and honey, as well as some herbaceous and tropical fruit notes that give it complexity. Its passage through wood gives it notes of coconut and soft smoked and great volume and smoothness in the mouth. It is a complex, elegant and very pleasant wine to drink.

Mendel Rosadia 2020 is the first rosé wine produced by Roberto de la Mota in Mendel. Vinified with grapes from our vineyard in Paraje Altamira, it delivers intense aromas reminiscent of white peach, pineapple and citrus fruits. On the palate it is a fresh, fruity wine, with a delicate and smooth mid palate, which makes it very easy to drink.

Lunta comes from our vineyards located in a special terroir in Luján de Cuyo with a view of the Sierras de Lunlunta. This Malbec was planted in 1928 and is managed using the same philosophy as the plots for Mendel wines. During the aging in barrels we select the wines with more fruit, and lighter in body and structure looking for a very friendly wine, fresh and easy to drink but at the same time with great volume on the palate and round tannins.
