in small tanks and aging wines in the finest French oak. Ancient vineyards, passionate people, experience and friendship are blended to create our remarkable wines.

Región

Weather | Location | Terroir

The climate is desert-like and continental, with well demarcated seasons throughout the year. With scarce rainfall, under 200 mm per year, viticulture requires irrigation, which is carried out in an especially unique way in this region. “Artisan flood irrigation,” originally practiced by native tribes permits us to control phylloxera in original-rootstock vineyards and to achieve adequate vigor; with low yields and the grape concentration we seek.

At an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level, the warmest days in the area can reach 33° C, but at night temperatures never rise above 17° C. The temperature swings have an important effect on the quantity and quality of the grapes’ polyphenols.
Our 1928 old Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located in Perdriel, Mayor Drummond and in Paraje Altamira.
We also have Cabernet Franc, Semillon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon at Finca Remota vineyards. Vineyards are between 900 and 1,150 meters above sea level, on the highest well-irrigated land in Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, Mendoza.
The alluvial soils of Mendel vineyards in Luján de Cuyo originate high in the Andes Mountains and are very poor in organic material. The soil is stony and permeable, with little nitrogenous and organic matter and rich in potassium. These soils create low to medium vigor vineyards, but allow us to reach high levels of concentration and intensity in our grapes.

VINEYARDS

FINCA MENDEL

Mayor Drummond
It is located in Mayor Drummond, Luján de Cuyo at 950 masl. It has a calcareous, loamy sand soil of alluvial origin with a good drainage. The climate is cold in winter and temperate in summer, with a thermal amplitude of 15 ° C between day and night that allows us to have an full maturity. The area has an annual rainfall of 200 mm. Four blocks are irrigated by a drip irrigation system and the rest of the vineyard by surface irrigation . Vines: there are 11 has. of a masal selection of  Malbec planted in 1928; 2 has. of Petit Verdot. Both varieties are conducted  in a French trolley system and there is a small pergola of Tempranillo.

FINCA DE LOS ANDES

Perdriel
It is located in Perdriel, in Luján de Cuyo at 1,050 masl, with clay-loam soil, with a stones that favor the drainage. It has an alluvial origin. The climate is cold in winter with occasional snowfall, and mild in summer but with cool nights. The average annual rainfall is 230 mm. The whole estate has drip irrigation that allows us to use and efficiently use of the water. Vines: there are 4 has. of Malbec and 2 has.  of Cabernet Sauvignon, all conducted in a French trolley system.
Paraje Altamira
It is located in Altamira, Valle de Uco at 1,040 masl. The vineyard has a sandy- loam and stony soil, very loose of alluvial origin. The climate is cold in winter with occasional snowfall, and temperate in summer with cold nights, which provides the region with a great thermal amplitude daily. The average annual rainfall is 170 mm. Our “Semillon” and “Malbec Finca Remota” are produced from grapes grown in the oldest and smallest part of this vineyard planted in 1947. It has superficial irrigation and a traditional management of the crop. It is conducted in low French trolley system and the yield is lower than 4 tons. per ha. The rest of the vineyard receives a modern management: the vines are conducted in medium height French trolley system and it has drip irrigation. In this vineyard there are  8 has. of Malbec, 3 has. of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 has. of Semillon, 2 has. of Cabernet Franc and 2 has. of Petit Verdot.

CARE OF THE VINEYARD

Both Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon arrived in Mendoza, Argentina, midway through the 19th century. Both adapted exceptionally well, but Malbec became dominant in the area. Our vines are planted on espaliers with a north-south orientation and with high density, 5,555 plants per hectare. Careful pruning, together with controlled irrigation during the cycle, give us an excellent exposure to the sun, a reduced number of bunches of grapes and medium sized berries. This ensures an excellent concentration, intensity and quality of grape.

Processing

Harvest

Harvest time is determined through hands-on tasting of grapes in the vineyards. We seek just the right ripeness to assure the intensity and quality of both the fruit and the tannins. The aim is to obtain a wine of intense maturity and a great quantity of fruit, but with the balance of acidity that ensures prolonged storage.

Winemaking

In keeping with our artisanal process, our grapes are harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning and taken to the winery in small recipients of 18-20 kg. After a manual selection process, the grapes are placed in small tanks of 50 to 80 hectoliters to macerate. This stage, which lasts for three to five weeks, is done by “piegage manuel,” manually sinking the skins into the liquid, ensuring an intense and selective extraction of aromas, tannins and polyphenols, the elements which will give the wine body volume and structure of the highest quality.

Aging

The ageing is done in new, French oak barrels and the wines are tasted regularly, allowing us to follow the evolution of each of the barrels’ contents.Eventually the time comes for the “assemblage,” where we combine grapes, plots and barrels to create the wine we have imagined and dreamed of. After the “blend,” the wines are bottled, avoiding filtrations and treatments that limit their intensity and complexity.

OUR WINES

Finca Remota / Malbec

Finca Remota is created with grapes from a small parcel in the Altamira. This is a very particular microclimate, located at more then 1,100 meters of altitude. As the relatively temperate days and very cool nights create a very long ripening period, the Malbec grown there is harvested nearly 25 days later than in other areas. The wines created with grapes from La Remota are characterized by being more aromatic and dominated by fresh fruit and flowers, like violets. By strictly controlling the yield in these old vineyeards we obtain very good concentration and structure in mouth. The wine’s vinification, as with the rest of Mendel wines, was classic, small 50 HL tanks with manual “piegage” and a 25 day maceration period. During a regular barrel tasting, in June of 2007, we were surprised by the intensity and complexity of the fruited and floral aromas, as well as the great quality and elegance of the tannins coming from the La Remota barrels. As an experiment, we separated four barrels. No doubt one of the most important characteristics of Mendel La Remota is the intensity and complexity of the fruit without domination from the wood, despite having spent some time in new barrels. Only one explanation is possible: the unmatchable quality of the terroir and the old vineyards that give origin to this singular wine.

Unus / Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon-Petit Verdot

Mendel Unus is the perfect combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The Cabernet Sauvignon, with its very present and mature tannins, forms part of the structure of the wine, while the Malbec collaborates by giving it complexity, fat and volume in the mouth. The result is a very complex, intense wine, with a lot of volume, but especially elegant and balanced.
